Some of the most iconic collaborations in history The visual arts have been for a long time in the history of humanity a narrative element that tells the story of the human race, however, this story is not limited only to being represented in the great paintings of Miguel Ángel or Da Vinci, fashion also plays a vital role in cultural identification and it should not surprise us that these two disciplines have inspired each other on a couple of occasions, which is why today we want to share with you some of the most iconic collaborations in which painting was the muse of some of the most renowned designers of our time.
We start with two of the greats, Gianni Versace the renowned fashion designer passionate about art history and Andy Warhol an artist who dared to break paradigms through his daring proposals join in 1991 to create a collection inspired by pop art in which a dress with circular cups made of a fabric printed with the faces of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean undoubtedly stole the show from the most recognized catwalks and became so iconic that in 2017 it was reinterpreted by the artist's sister as a tribute on the 20th anniversary of his death. We continue with a contemporary artist who still lives today and continues to set trends, Takashi Murakami, a Japanese artist, joined Louis Vuitton to create a collection of bags inspired by the artist's characteristic colors, as well as some of his most representative elements. Many times the inspiration of the great designers also comes from admiration and so it was in the case of the designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé who created a great collection in tribute to the Dutch artist who carried the flag of the neoplastic movement, Piet Mondrian.
On the other hand, we have proposals a bit out of the ordinary, designers who dared to capture movement like surrealism and all that entailed in the making of a garment so that it could be worthy of one of Dalí's crazy dreams and thus it was thanks to the collaboration between the designer Elsa Schiaparelli and the mentioned artist Salvador Dalí who were also great friends in life that an unforgettable collaboration was born. Schiaparelli produced a series of evening dresses and accessories that play with juxtaposition and unexpected elements such as a lobster painted on the fabric of one of the dresses or cuts in the material that gave the illusion that the skin of the person wearing it was being peeled.
Finally, we have the collaboration of the great Alexander McQueen and the much loved and hated Damien Hirst, a combination undoubtedly quite controversial, but truly striking, a collaboration in which Hirst created exclusive designs for a series of 30 scarves and exclusive handkerchiefs for McQueen inspired by two of his unmistakable symbols: the butterfly and the skull. 10 years later, a performance incorporating all the elements of these scarves is created, bringing them to life through fabrics, music, and dance.
