Silvia Carvajal

Sylvia Carvajal was born in Cúcuta and trained in architecture and design. Her thesis, Aborigine, a series of drawings, marked the beginning of her artistic career. Her working life started with a job that, although enriching, left her exhausted. This exhaustion became the spark that ignited her work Life in Motion. With this series, she won first place in the Opus 2022 call from the Melaka Gallery, which allowed her to hold a solo exhibition in 2023.

That same year, she was one of the winners of Legacy of Art, which enabled her to exhibit at the Baobab Gallery, and her work was selected for the Million Fair 2023. In 2024, she participated in Artbotutor, further consolidating her presence in the artistic field. In addition, she was part of the exhibition Everything is Going to be Alright with Culto Gallery, an experience that strengthened her evolution as an artist.

This project arises from Sylvia Carvajal's first work experience, where her self-demand to be the best prevented her from enjoying a promising stage. Inspired by the book The Society of Tiredness by Byung-Chul Han, the artist develops a work that represents individuals in moments of anxiety and stress related to work, unaware that they might be going through one of the best stages of their lives.

The pieces portray people who, despite exhaustion, continue to go out with friends or partners without allowing themselves to rest, trying to make every second productive. This society, without a clear direction, is bombarded by apparent successes on social media that obscure real processes and generate comparison and dissatisfaction. The work invites reflection: do we live to work or do we work to live?
