About his work
The relationship between art and design in fashion invites us to rethink identity as a constant flow. Clothing, which traditionally serves a utilitarian function, transcends this purpose and becomes a visual language that reflects both who we are and who we aspire to be. Giovanni Rojas invites us to look beyond the suit as a mere garment, challenging its rigidity and limitations. Fragmented and stripped of its structure, the dress transforms into a mirror of the internal changes of the wearer, revealing the visible and the invisible in a play between what we are and what we project. Through his drawings, Giovanni merges precision and freedom, exploring the tension between control and expression. The fabric treated like paper and the texture of the canvas reflect an attempt to master the unpredictable while embracing imperfection. Monochrome, with its range of grays, evokes the ambiguity of human nature, a space where opposites coexist. The repeated patterns and lines not only structure the work but also meditate on symmetry, transgression, and a fragmented identity, in constant transformation. In three-dimensionality, the suit materializes, overflowing the plane of the canvas. What was once a two-dimensional image takes on a new form of presence, something that can be touched and traversed. This questions not only the representation itself but also the relationship between the physical and the symbolic, the real and the represented. The work disrupts our perception of fashion and invites us to reimagine being as something expansive, always in process, in constant becoming.
Biography
Bogotá, 1987. Plastic and visual artist graduated from Asab, he has participated in collective exhibitions since 2010 in Colombia, Peru, and Argentina. Technically, his work is framed primarily within the technique of drawing. Since 2017, he has started creating series of drawings that address the female portrait as viewed through advertising images of fashion, mixing drawing and painting techniques through graphite, enamel, and watercolor.
He explores the aesthetics of fashion illustration, creating images that reflect, poetize, and construct visual imaginaries between art and fashion design. In his recent works, the drawing that shapes his artistic interest merges with written words within the work, creating a conceptual parallel between the meaning of the drawing and the signifier of the written word, thus seeking to expand the possible readings of the work. In his artistic project, the minimalist concept is present as an aesthetic end.
